Lipgloss and Lenses in action

Just a quick pic from the Saddleworth Vintage and Handmade Fair on the Queen’s Jubilee, a few weeks ago. Not the most flattering of either of us but it was the end of the day and we’d both been working very hard. Lisa, in the beautiful Union Jack handmade circle skirt is the Make-Over side of the operation, Jude sporting swing trousers, is the Photographer.

Kyla Brox at Lipgloss and Lenses

Kyla Brox may be well known to a number of you as she is a local Blues singer who has been nominated for the Uk female blues singer of the year. Her next performance in the area will be at the Diggle Blues Festival which is this weekend – 15th,16th and 17th June.

On Sunday 3rd June it was her birthday and she spent some of that time browsing at the Saddleworth Vintage and Handmade Fair, and posing for us as a model.

Many thanks to Kyla – and here are her photographs.

Happy Birthday Marilyn

Lipgloss & Lenses liked this post

Happy birthday to one of Lipgloss and Lenses’ favourite vintage screen icons. Norma Jean Baker, aka Marilyn Monroe, would have been celebrating her 86th birthday today if she were still alive. I wonder what she would have looked like?

Marilyn Monroe

Troubled though she was, Marilyn was one of the most naturally alluring women to grace the last century, which, along with her fascinating life and death) story accounts for her enduring appeal to this day. To mark Marilyn’s birthday weekend Jude and I will be doing  a Marilyn-inspired photoshoot at Saddleworth Jubilee Vintage and Handmade Fair in Uppermill on Sunday. Come along and watch us in action. Our model will be the very beautiful Miss Tameside, Ciara Hilton.

A splash of Monroe and a flash of a Bygone Era

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Marilyn had just entered the room. The Civic Hall will play host to a Supermodel in the making – Miss Tameside – on Sunday at the Saddleworth Vintage and Handmade Fair. Miss Tameside, otherwise known as Ciara Hilton from Mossley, Lancashire is a local beauty and has recently  won the titles of Miss Congeniality form the Spirit of Beauty Pageant, Miss Charity and Miss Monroe. She is sunning herself and getting enough beauty sleep ready for her entry this year into Miss Seaside Beauty Pageant in Blackpool in August.

The ladies at Lipgloss and Lenses will have the pleasure of taking her under their wing for an hour or so at the Saddleworth Vintage and Handmade Fair and transforming Ciara into ‘Marilyn Monroe‘. Lisa Gee will apply her make-up and quaff her hair, and Jude Gidney will work with the model and light photographing her to capture a likeness of the screen legend. All images from the shoot will be available to view on the Lipgloss and Lenses website www.photopamperparty.co.uk after the fair.

Saddleworth Vintage and Handmade Fair is taking place this Sunday, 3rd June, at the Civic Hall in Uppermill 10-4pm. Miss Tameside is expected at 11am. For more details please visit the Saddleworth Vintage website – www.saddleworthvintage.co.uk

Lipgloss and Lenses supporting local handmade

We are very big on supporting local makers, manufacturers and designers here at Lipgloss and Lenses, hence the Jubilee vintage and handmade fair we are hosting at Uppermill Civic Hall on June 3rd.

So with that in mind we are thrilled to announce that the makeup and skincare products we use in our makeovers, photoshoots and pamper parties will in future be supplied by West Yorkshire based Inesse. All of Inesse’s products are handmade in Castleford from British sourced ingredients. They contain no parabens or sulphates are are gentle in the skin, particularly important when working with young skin, as we so often do.

The whole ethos of the company – high quality, handmade, ethical products at affordable prices, sits squarely with what Jude and I are trying to promote at Lipgloss and Lenses, so we are delighted to be involved with Inesse. We will be unveiling the new product range at Saddleworth WI’s Swishing event at Dobcross Band Club on Friday 11th May. All the products will be available to order from us, as the first Inesse supplier in the North West.

Please come along and have a look, say hello and see the wide range of pamper party and makeover photoshoot packages we offer. You’ll be helping to raise funds for the WI’s chosen charities. And if that wasn’t enticement enough, who can resist the chance to swap that old frocky horror at the back of the wardrobe for something sexy and sophisticated.

I’m off to raid my wardrobe now.

Lisa’s Bottom Line – Why We Must Support British Creatives

Can you feel it? There’s a distinct swell in our pride in all things British. Something is definitely in the air. Whether it is the upcoming Queen’s Diamond Jubilee or the Olympics I’m not sure, but there is definitely something happening. Even good old Marks and Spencer are proudly flying the flag in their new summer TV ad. Have you seen it? They’ve signed up Gary Barlow to sing Here Comes The Sun Now that might not be the most apt song given today’s major snowfalls, but you can’t deny the spirit behind it.

It could be a long time yet before Britain pulls itself out of the financial mire it is in, but there is a real optimism in the air, like we have all collectively decided to pull the country up by its boot-straps and make it great again.

The best way that we can do that is to support British manufacturing and British creative talent. Mary Portas has hit the nail right on the head. We have a wonderful textiles heritage, particularly in Oldham and the surrounding mill towns. It is a crying shame that the industry is all but gone, lost to cheap overseas manufacturing. Mary, champion of the British High Street, has rightly decided that this is a travesty and a tragedy and she is leading the way in doing something about it. She has brought jobs to a troubled area of Middleton and come up with a great product, Kinky Knickers, a product 100% made in Britain.

Kinky Knickers launched in several retailers last week and they are already like gold dust. Interest in them has no doubt been stirred up by the Channel 4 series, Mary’s Bottom Line, but more than that she seems to have hit a patriotic chord with Britain’s women. I love the fact Mary Portas is doing so much to support British manufacturing, but I also love the product and especially its glamorous vintage style packaging.

Vintage is huge right now. It makes us all nostalgic for better times. Why do you think Jude and I love it so much? Well, there is the glamour too of course. We all love a bit of glamour.

There is a massive amount of creative talent in this country and it needs to be supported. More than that, there’s a massive amount of creative talent in this area. Lots and lots of small businesses, independent designers and makers. Supporting local businesses has long been a passion of mine, after all I have one and so does my husband.

There will never be a better time than 2012 to promote all things British. The eyes of the world are upon us this year and we can all do our bit. I know finance, or lack of it, is a key issue for many people, but if you can support a British business, or better yet a local one, then please consider doing so. Just think of the difference we could make.

At Lipgloss and Lenses we are trying to do our bit to promote British creative talent by organising a Vintage and Handmade Fair to mark the Jubilee weekend in Saddleworth. It will be held at Uppermill Civic Hall on Sunday 3rd June and will feature stalls from a number of renowned designer makers, local creative businesses and vintage sellers, plus a vintage tea room.

You can read more about the fair and other events happening that weekend on www.saddleworthvintage.co.uk. Please support us in supporting local manufacturing. Anyway, it’ll be fun ;-)

With many thanks to our beautiful model, Charlie, who gamely posed for us in nothing but a Union Jack so that I could get on my soap box.

Vintage and Handmade Fair Promo Shoot

Today saw us down at the Mill undertaking a Vintage Make-over Photo shoot, shooting images for the promotion of the Saddleworth Vintage and Handmade Fair that takes place on the 3rd June in Uppermill.

11am we all arrived at the studio, Lisa, our model Laura and myself paid a visit to our dress suppliers Limb, housed in a unit on the top floor of the Mill. We chose 3 dresses that we felt were suitable for our shoot. In the meantime Sam Mills kindly collected our throne for the day from Made with Love Ltd, also with a unit in the Mill. Lisa then ensured Laura’s make-up was as she wished and made touches to her hair to suit the Vintage theme. Sam supplied us with coffee and showed us her array of contemporary jewellery that she wished to use in the shoot. Here’s a sneak preview of the results – more to come early next week, please return to see a wonderful selection of images which will eventually be montaged into the resulting image for the promo, using my photo-processing and photoshop skills.
