Saddleworth WI’s 40′s Evening

Last night was the annual Saddleworth Women’s Institute’s 40′s evening, that surely went with a swing. Greenfield’s Back Step Boogie not only demonstrated

Backstep Boogie Club

their dancing abilities with some jumping and jiving, but also helpfully taught those that are less familiar with the steps of the era how to stroll in a couple of different ways. Then later the wonderful Jump Jive and Wail Band kept the feet tapping.

Lipgloss and Lenses were offering 1940s make-up and hair styling and taking portraits during the evening and also capturing the atmosphere of the room. Please click on the first image to access the slideshow and join us in a stroll through the 40s and 50s.

What to Wear and Bring to a Vintage Make-Over Hen or Birthday Party

You want to wear clothes that could be passed off as Vintage ( 40′s / 50′s) - have a look in the Gallery section of our website for inspiration. Most of the images that we will be taking will be head and neck shots so if you don’t have a dress suitable, then an open neck blouse or roll neck jumper, or even a strappy sundress would look good. There are quite a few Vintage Clothes shops around although you may find something that looks good in a local Charity Shop. There are also a number of Vintage Inspired Designers around – both in Manchester and closer to saddleworth. One of our favourites is Limb – the Vanity Project based in Woodend Mill in Mossley. Within Vintage you may also want to theme it further : Land-girls, evening wear, 1930′s but the more narrow you make the theme the more difficult it may be for some to play along.

We have a variety of scarves, furs and necklaces that you may borrow. Please bring any dress gloves, scarves, handbags, furs, hats etc of your own if you think they’ll be suitable. We’ve had a lady turn up with a Vintage Camera in the past, she was a photographer.

Full length images may also be taken so if you have suitable shoes please bring them. Usually high heels fit this bill. There is a changing room in the studio.

Please can you also bring a hairbrush/comb.

During the session you will have make-up applied by Lisa and, depending on how many there are of you, a visiting make-up artist, and photographs taken by Jude. If you’d prefer to style your own hair before you come please do – ringlets often look great and Lisa will style with flowers, bows, scarves etc.

It takes Lisa approximately 30-40 mins with each lady, we try to keep you entertained with Parlour games, but you’re welcome to bring any games or entertainment of your own, please talk to me at the beginning of the session if this is the case, thanks.

As part of all our celebrations we’re offering over this week, the chance to win a Make-Over Photo Shoot for you and a friend or for someone whom you have nominated- either contemporary or Vintage, worth over £120 . The winner will be announced on Friday 7th December.

Here at Lipgloss and Lenses Towers, we’ve had a very busy time recently. This has included not only numerous parties and Make-Over Shoots but also the Opening Day at the Studio and Launch of the new Photo Booth and celebrations of Lipgloss and Lenses’ first birthday (the name Lisa and I go under when working together).

The Make-Over Photo Shoot will involve you coming to the studio in Greenfield for a session of pampering and make up, hair styling and then a photo shoot involving over 3 different sets. You may change clothes to get an altogether different look and style. At the end of the session you will both be able to choose an 8×10″ print of your choice and a facebook gallery of images to share with friends and family.

All aboard for the Vintage Awards- Ting Ting!

Last Wednesday night saw a group of businesses from the Saddleworth area, part of a collaborative named Saddleworth Vintage and Handmade and

supporters, making ourway to the Best of Vintage Manchester Awards 2012 at Matt and Phred’s Club in Manchester.

Out of the businesses were 4 finalists, so tensions and excitement was high. The finalist were LisaMarie Gee ( hair and Make-Up), Mandy Beck of Saddleworth Shindigs ( Best crockery retailer), CarolOldham ( Best Blog) and myself ( best Vintage Photographer).

Preparations were started at my studio, where Lisa Marie Gee transformed most of the ladies into Vintage Glamour Models with her hair and make-up skills. We than boarded a Vintage Bus, from the Saddleworth Vintage Bus Company and made a very bumpy and noisy trip into the centre of Manchester.The evening was so surreal, with the majority of guests dressed in 1930, 1940s and 1950s evening wear. To rapturous applause, the awards were announced and Carol Oldham of Dormouse and the teapot came away with an award, the rest proud of coming second.

All is very exciting in the glittery world of Lipgloss and Lenses because we have both been shortlisted in the Vintage Manchester Awards. I (Lisa) am nominated for Best Vintage Beauty and Jude is on the shortlist for Best Vintage Photography. To say we are excited is a major understatement. The publicity surrounding the awards is doing wonders for our profile, so if you are finding us for the first time, here’s a little video that shows all the things we do at Lipgloss and Lenses.

Kyla Brox at Lipgloss and Lenses

Kyla Brox may be well known to a number of you as she is a local Blues singer who has been nominated for the Uk female blues singer of the year. Her next performance in the area will be at the Diggle Blues Festival which is this weekend – 15th,16th and 17th June.

On Sunday 3rd June it was her birthday and she spent some of that time browsing at the Saddleworth Vintage and Handmade Fair, and posing for us as a model.

Why You’ll Never Find Lipgloss and Lenses on Groupon.

Vintage makeover photography from Lipgloss and Lenses

Like most people I get those daily Groupon emails and I have even bought a couple of deals in the past for canvasses to put my photographs on, but I would never dream of advertising my own services on there. I see ads for makeover photoshoots on there at least once a week for around £19. Sounds like a bargain doesn’t it? The services of two professionals – a makeup artist and a photographer – for just £19?

As one of those professionals it sets massive alarm bells ringing for me. Jude and I couldn’t possibly offer the high quality service we are known for at Lipgloss and Lenses for that price. We would lose money. I have a theory that there are only two ways companies can make money by offering prices like that. Either they offer a very substandard service, knowing that Groupon customers are after a bargain and will most likely never come back, or they massively inflate their print prices and put on the hard sell once the session is over.

I have spoken to people who have experienced both scenarios. What happened the next time they wanted a makeover photoshoot? They decided that you get what you pay for and they came to us. At Lipgloss and Lenses all of our pricing is completely transparent. Our reprint prices are very reasonable and are there to see before you even book. Jude and I love our work and take great pride in it, whether we are doing a single makeover portrait session, a group photoshoot or a photo pamper party.

A couple of weeks ago I received a phone call from Groupon. They had seen the vintage makeover photoshoots we specialise in and thought it would be something a bit different for them to offer. I politely declined, much to the horror of the person on the other end of the phone. He seemed genuinely surprised I didn’t snatch his hand off.

Days later, sure enough there was an offer from another photo studio offering vintage makeover photoshoots. Not a service I had ever seen them offer before, but hey, immitation is the sincerest form of flattery, no? I thought no more about it until this weekend I saw a post from a reputable photography studio irate that one of their images had been copied and used on an ad on Groupon. Guess which offer it was?

Like I said, you generally get what you pay for.
