Happy Birthday!

We celebrate a lot of birthdays with a lot of attractive young ladies. This group was no exception.

The party starts with us introducing ourselves and playing ice breaker games to get to know our ladies. During the party each girl has make-up, being able to chat with Lisa about their own needs for cosmetics and picking up tips. And whilst waiting to be photographed with various sets, they are kept amused by continuing to play simple parlour games. It’s regularly commented upon as to how we keep the girls interested and  busy rather than sitting twiddling thumbs.

Abbie’s Lipgloss and Lenses Birthday Party

Jude Gidney liked this post

We welcomed our first party girls of the New Year to the studio last weekend. Birthday girl Abbie chose Lipgloss and Lenses to help her celebrate her 10th birthday with her two closest friends, Emma and Chloe.

We played a few games to get everyone warmed up and banish any nerves and then the three girls each got a makeover before having their photographs taken, individually and as a group. You can see from the photographs that we specialise in age-appropriate makeup. We don’t want to make young girls look like painted dolls, or appear older than they are. To us, it is all about bringing out natural beauty and creating a subtle look that looks great on camera. This approach is, we believe, the reason why our bookings  for girls under 16 are increasing all the time. The process of being pampered is just as important and just as much fun for the girls as the end result.

Since moving to the new studio we have much more space and as a result we can play about a bit more with sets and backdrops. At present we have four different set-ups for our girls’ pamper parties. We still offer the traditional high-key portrait look with a white background, but in addition we have delicate pastel coloured backdrops and our very popular graffiti wall. The latest addition is a dramatic back-lit black and white set with a checkerboard floor.

We have plans for even more sets in the near future to expand our range and keep our look fresh. The detail is hush hush at the moment, but watch this space.

Lipgloss and Lenses in action

Just a quick pic from the Saddleworth Vintage and Handmade Fair on the Queen’s Jubilee, a few weeks ago. Not the most flattering of either of us but it was the end of the day and we’d both been working very hard. Lisa, in the beautiful Union Jack handmade circle skirt is the Make-Over side of the operation, Jude sporting swing trousers, is the Photographer.

Why You’ll Never Find Lipgloss and Lenses on Groupon.

Vintage makeover photography from Lipgloss and Lenses

Vintage makeover photography from Lipgloss and Lenses

Like most people I get those daily Groupon emails and I have even bought a couple of deals in the past for canvasses to put my photographs on, but I would never dream of advertising my own services on there. I see ads for makeover photoshoots on there at least once a week for around £19. Sounds like a bargain doesn’t it?  The services of two professionals – a makeup artist and a photographer – for just £19?

As one of those professionals it sets massive alarm bells ringing for me. Jude and I couldn’t possibly offer the high quality service we are known for at Lipgloss and Lenses for that price. We would lose money. I have a theory that there are only two ways companies can make money by offering prices like that. Either they offer a very substandard service, knowing that Groupon customers are after a bargain and will most likely never come back, or they massively inflate their print prices and put on the hard sell once the session is over.

I have spoken to people who have experienced both scenarios. What happened the next time they wanted a makeover photoshoot? They decided that you get what you pay for and they came to us. At Lipgloss and Lenses all of our pricing is completely transparent. Our reprint prices are very reasonable and are there to see before you even book. Jude and I love our work and take great pride in it, whether we are doing a single makeover portrait session, a group photoshoot or a photo pamper party.

A couple of weeks ago I received a phone call from Groupon. They had seen the vintage makeover photoshoots we specialise in and thought it would be something a bit different for them to offer. I politely declined, much to the horror of the person on the other end of the phone. He seemed genuinely surprised I didn’t snatch his hand off.

Days later, sure enough there was an offer from another photo studio offering vintage makeover photoshoots. Not a service I had ever seen them offer before, but hey, immitation is the sincerest form of flattery, no? I thought no more about it until this weekend I saw a post from a reputable photography studio irate that one of their images had been copied and used on an ad on Groupon. Guess which offer it was?

Like I said, you generally get what you pay for.

Lipgloss and Lenses supporting local handmade

We are very big on supporting local makers, manufacturers and designers here at Lipgloss and Lenses, hence the Jubilee vintage and handmade fair we are hosting at Uppermill Civic Hall on June 3rd.

So with that in mind we are thrilled to announce that the makeup and skincare products we use in our makeovers, photoshoots and pamper parties will in future be supplied by West Yorkshire based Inesse. All of Inesse’s products are handmade in Castleford from British sourced ingredients. They contain no parabens or sulphates are are gentle in the skin, particularly important when working with young skin, as we so often do.

The whole ethos of the company – high quality, handmade, ethical products at affordable prices, sits squarely with what Jude and I are trying to promote at Lipgloss and Lenses, so we are delighted to be involved with Inesse. We will be unveiling the new product range at Saddleworth WI’s Swishing event at Dobcross Band Club on Friday 11th May. All the products will be available to order from us, as the first Inesse supplier in the North West.

Please come along and have a look, say hello and see the wide range of pamper party and makeover photoshoot packages we offer. You’ll be helping to raise funds for the WI’s chosen charities. And if that wasn’t enticement enough, who can resist the chance to swap that old frocky horror at the back of the wardrobe for something sexy and sophisticated.

I’m off to raid my wardrobe now.

The proof of the pudding…

If you look around the Lipgloss & Lenses website you will come across lots of beautiful photographs of ladies young and old that have been subject to the L&L treatment. But what you rarely see, because we women are a vain and hugely insecure bunch, is the ‘before’ shot.

Like most women, I am not keen on having my photograph taken. I am much happier behind the lens, or better still, behind my make-up chair. But recently I underwent a fairly drastic transformation, from my natural blonde to a bold redhead. I decided that a new profile photo was in order, so, after yesterday’s photo pamper party ended, I found myself under the studio lights.

I am thrilled with the resulting image and immediately uploaded it to use on my Facebook and Twitter profiles. If you saw me in the playground on a wet morning school run you probably wouldn’t think it was the same woman, but that is kind of the point of good makeover portrait photography isn’t it? Women don’t want to look like their every day selves in a portrait photograph. They want to look the best that they can, which is where skilled make-up artistry and photography come in.

It is all very well me showing you my lovely new profile photo, but to understand exactly what Jude and I can do you need to be able to put the photo in context. The proof of the pudding, so to speak. And so, for those of you fortunate enough not to encounter me in the playground first thing in the morning, here I am bravely revealed in all my bare faced, badly lit glory…..

The Party of the Year

As I blogged last week, we had our most important party of the year in the studio on Saturday. OK, I know the year was only two weeks old, but still….

For those who missed my last posting, our very important guest hostess at Saturday’s photo pamper party was none other than my daughter, celebrating her fifth birthday with her friends. Although we do pamper parties all the time, it is not often that we play host to such young ladies and I was more than a little nervous about how it would turn out, particularly as Little Miss Lipgloss was very specific about her requirements.

Looking back on it now I don’t know why I was so worried. It ended up being one of my favourite parties ever. The girls, all dressed in their finest fairy princess outfits, were all beautifully behaved. Everyone had a fantastic time and the photos? Well, I think they speak for themselves. Jude excelled herself. I have seen Jude work many many times, but even my breath was taken away when I saw just how beautiful my little fairy princess looks on her photographs. Yes, I know I am biased, but judge for yourselves….

I brought my own fairy wings out of storage especially for the occasion and a great time was had by all. A dozen sparkly pink cupcakes from local cake supplier Emma Bakes Cupcakes put the finishing touches to what was a lovely day. I’m glad it is only once a year though. ;-)

If you would like to book a photo pamper party for your own fairy princess you can find details of our party packages here. Contact us for further information or booking details by using the form on our contact page here.
